Butterflies are a symbol of resurrection, hope, joy, and new beginnings. The design of this incense box reveals a poetic beauty that reminds us of the verse by Qi Gong, a descendant of the royal family in the Qing Dynasty, “The night has not been disturbed by the wind and fog. Butterflies pleasantly greet me when the dawn comes.” Through the intricate and vivid gold-leaf maki-e, the scenery is depicted on this lacquer creation.
