Foreword
A Shared Life in Time
To share a life is to share time: its quiet repetitions, patient layering, and unseen transformations. For Hanako GEJO and Takeshi IGAWA, husband and wife, urushi (natural lacquer in Japanese) is both medium and mirror — a practice shaped by devotion, discipline, and the slow accumulation of days.
With urushi, each layer must wait for the next. Depth is built through patience; brilliance emerges through restraint. Likewise, their artistic lives unfold in parallel — distinct yet resonant, independent yet intimately connected. Through surface, form, and touch, this exhibition traces two artists who have lived alongside one another, pursuing the same ancient material with separate hands and a shared spirit.
A Shared Life in Time presents urushi as both craft and record — of endurance, intimacy, and time itself.
Born in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, in 1980, Hanako GEJO received her M.F.A. from Kyoto City University of Arts in 2006. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across Japan, Hong Kong, Korea and the Europe, including the Ishikawa International Urushi Exhibition 2023 and Fine Art Asia. In 2011, she received the Encouragement Award at the 50th Japan Craft Exhibition in Tokyo, and in 2016 she was awarded by the Saga Prefecture Arts and Cultural Association to recognise her artistic achievement. Gejo is currently a part-time lecturer at Kyushu Sangyo University.
Gejo’s lacquer works are distinguished by their vivid chromatic sensibility and refined use of decorative techniques, including shell inlay, gold leaf and metal powders. Fluent in a wide range of lacquer processes, she creates sculptural forms that are full-bodied yet graceful, combining volume, elegance and a subtle feminine sensibility. This balance of richness and restraint has become a defining feature of her artistic language.

Born in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, in 1980, Takeshi IGAWA lives and works in Saga City. He is Associate Professor at Saga University in Kyushu. Igawa received his M.F.A. and Ph.D. from Kyoto City University of Arts in 2005 and 2009 respectively. In 2017, he was awarded the 35th Kyoto Cultural Award and received the Grand Prize at the 3rd Triennale of Kogei in Kanazawa. Igawa was shortlisted for the 2017 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, with his work included in the accompanying exhibitions in Madrid, New York and Tokyo. His works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, including at Fine Art Asia since 2020. In November 2022, The Gallery by SOIL presented his solo exhibition in Hong Kong.
Igawa explores beauty through the relationship between line, surface and volume, often contrasting the depth of black with the lustrous qualities of lacquer. His signature works employ the kanshitsu technique, in which layers of lacquer are applied over a fabric-based form, allowing for exceptional freedom in shaping and expression. By constructing a core from palm stalks, wood chips and raw lacquer, then reinforcing it with hemp cloth, Igawa creates dynamic, flowing forms that evoke both the physical presence and spiritual essence of nature.
