" In this fast-paced life, I understand that everyone needs time and energy to pursue what enriches the soul. This is not only a means of mental relaxation but also a sanctuary against the onslaught of daily trivialities.
SHI Yuguang
SHI Yuguang was born in 1990 in Hebei Province, China. He graduated from the China Academy of Art in 2014 and currently resides in Hangzhou, China. He received the Excellence Award at the 2013 National Lacquer Painting Exhibition, and his works are part of the permanent collection of the Fujian Provincial Art Museum, China, as well as being acquired by private collectors. Represented by the Gallery by SOIL, his works were first shown at Fine Art Asia in 2024, followed by exhibitions at Art Central in 2025 and Fine Art Asia 2025. This is his first solo exhibition taking place in Hong Kong.
Shi’s lacquer paintings merge simplicity and complexity, flowing like prose in a stream-of-consciousness style. Abstract colour blocks and lines disrupt the typical heaviness of lacquer, creating seemingly spontaneous yet carefully crafted forms. His work reflects an inner self, embracing lightness and purity. This effortless style is surprising, given the focused patience and mastery required by lacquer, a medium shaped by time and technique.

Artist Statement
Another Fine Day!
In this fast-paced life, I understand that everyone needs time and energy to pursue what enriches the soul. This is not only a means of mental relaxation but also a sanctuary against the onslaught of daily trivialities. In our busy routines, we often lose sight of the time spent on “useless” joys; yet it is the preservation of this happiness that grants us moments of tranquility and satisfaction amid the chaos.
Through creation, I have gradually discovered its profound significance. After work, I yearn to rewind, paint, and express myself with my hands. When an idea materialises into a piece of art, it adorns my living space with a fresh allure and adds a touch of delightful strangeness. Each time I immerse myself fully, my spirit finds peace, and a sense of fulfilment arises.
On this creative journey, I hope my works inspire both myself and the viewers to feel a sense of “it could be this way” or “how delightful,” rather than merely striving for excellence. For me, creation is about playfully experimenting with meaningful or trivial things; this process is never ending, even though I may adopt different forms at various stages.
In this exhibition, I sincerely hope that audience can feel that flicker of joy. May we all find our own creativity in life, nurturing that inner richness and calm.
