Nan Wei has been inspired by the sculptural lacquer creation in Japan which demonstrates that lacquer art could be a progressive medium. She learns about employing non-traditional techniques, such as the use of leather, instead of only wood or cloth as a substrate, to create innovative conceptual works that respect the material’s natural qualities. Her Chinese background has offered her sets of beliefs and sense of aesthetics which she incorporates into her creations. There is a lot of subconscious influences in the process that she does not really necessarily think about beforehand.
