  • 'Grand Globular Vases' originated during the Yongxuan period of the Ming Dynasty (1403-1435). They earned this name due to their spacious and celestial sphere-like shape. These vases were primarily intended as decoration for the imperial court.

In a nod to the past, Master Gan has skilfully crafted large celestial vases, adorned with red gold spots and green gold spots, drawing inspiration from the imperial kiln made celestial vases. These masterpieces meld the splendour of Hui style ‘Xipi’ rhinoceros lacquer with the elegance of imperial collection.

This creation is a continuation of the Big Tianqiu Vase series. Its form is derived from the Qianlong famille rose flower-and-bird Tianqiu vase in the Shanghai Museum collections. The lacquer is enriched by incorporating turquoise, gold, and other fine powders, resulting in a vivid and refined green hue. The gold spots exude a touch of tranquillity. Despite its compact size, the traditional rhinoceros lacquer technique involves meticulous layering, alternating between high and low padding, layering multiple coats of lacquer, then polishing. These steps culminate in a surface as smooth as jade, adorned with a resplendent golden sheen.

While the dimensions of this piece are moderate, its style is extraordinary.
