MA Gaoxin

Born in June 1995 in Handan, China, MA Gaoxian graduated from the School of Arts and Design at Guilin University of Technology in June 2019. Following his graduation, he studied under Onishi Nagatoshi at the Gansen Urushi Studio International in Tokyo, Japan. In March 2021, he interned at the Kanazawa College of Art and completed his Master's degree in Crafts there in March 2023, mentored by Nobuyuki Tanaka.

Ma has received several prestigious awards, including the President's Encouragement Award from the Kanazawa Craft Association in the 78th Kanazawa Craft Exhibition in 2022 and the President's Award from Hokuriku News in the 36th Modern Crafts Exhibition in Ishikawa. He was also selected for the 5th Kanazawa World Craft Triennale and the Ishikawa International Lacquerware Exhibition in 2023.

His exhibition activities include a group exhibition titled "Lacquer that Adorns Forms" in September 2022 and a solo exhibition, "Ma Gaoxian Lacquer Sculpture Exhibition," at Gallery O2 in Kanazawa in January 2023. Additionally, he participated in the "Surface Emergence - Contemporary Lacquer Art Exhibition" in Wuhan in 2023. Recent exhibitions included a duo show with Wang Guangle titled "Functional and Non-Functional" at Beijing Lemoo Gallery in October 2024, and another solo exhibition, "The Fantasy of Wells," at Gallery O2 in Kanazawa in March 2025. This is his first solo exhibition held in Hong Kong at The Gallery by SOIL.

馬高賢

馬高賢1995年6月出生於中國邯鄲。他於2019年6月畢業於桂林理工大學藝術設計學院。畢業後於2019年7月在日本東京願船漆工房學習，師從大西長利。2021年3月，他在日本金澤美術工藝大學見習，並於2023年3月獲得該校工藝專業碩士學位，導師為田中信行。

馬高賢在其職業生涯中獲得了多項重要獎項和認可。2022年，他在第78回金澤工藝展中獲得金澤市工藝協會會長獎勵賞。此外，他在第36回石川現代工藝展中獲得北國新聞社社長獎。同年，他還入選第5回金澤世界工藝三年展和2023年石川國際漆器展。

他的展覽活動包括參加2022年9月的「漆裝·三人展」。他於2023年1月在日本金澤的Gallery O2舉辦了個人展覽「馬高賢漆造型展」。在2023年參加了武漢的「浮出水面·當代漆藝展」。 2024年10月與王光樂的雙人展名為「成器與不器」，地點為北京勒木畫廊，並2025年3月在金澤Gallery O2舉辦個人展覽「走井幻想談」。 今次是首次在香港The Gallery by SOIL 土壤文創 舉行個展。

馬高賢將到香港與我們在 2025 年 9 月 6 日星期六下午3-5時跟大家聚聚，談談他在在日本及中國的漆藝之路，以及「泉」的創作經歷。

Artist Statement

The Source of Life and the Essence of Warmth

This exhibition draws inspiration from a book I stumbled upon, The Mythology of the Breast. The text transcends biological interpretations, presenting the breast as a rich cultural symbol imbued with multiple layers of meaning.

In various civilizations and myths, the breast embodies beauty, motherhood, and the gift of life, while simultaneously carrying the tension of desire and taboo. In mythology, it is a divine blessing; in art history, from ancient sculptures to Renaissance paintings, its perfect fullness and curves have been depicted as visual metaphors for feminine beauty and vitality.

For me, lacquer is a material that possesses "life" and "warmth." Its slow, irreversible curing process resembles the nurturing of life. The luster and tactile quality of lacquer awaken the unique warmth of a material that has endured through millennia.

Throughout my artistic practice, I have been captivated by the language of curved lacquer surfaces. The shape of the breast represents a pure and symbolic form of curvature, embodying embracing lines and an implied direction toward the origin of life. Sculpting this form in lacquer is not only an homage to feminine beauty but also a means of expressing warmth, nurturing, and the continuous flow of life.

Thus, I have titled this series "The Fountain of Life." It symbolizes the source, flow, and nourishment of life—both a natural fountain of vitality and an emotional symbol in cultural memory. Through this body of work, I aim to juxtapose the physical properties of lacquer with the cross-cultural symbol of the breast, inviting viewers to experience the interplay of visual and tactile imagination: life can form slowly, warmth can be materialized, and memories can flow quietly, like a fountain.

藝術家的話

生命的起點與溫度的凝聚

展覽的靈感源自一本書《乳房的神話——Mythologie du sein》。書中對乳房的解讀超越了生物學，成為富含多重象徵意義的文化符號。

在不同文明與傳說中，乳房既象徵柔美、母性與生命的賜予，也承載著欲望與禁忌的張力。它在神話中是女神的恩賜；在藝術史上，從古代雕像到文藝復興的畫布，乳房的豐滿與弧線被不斷描繪，成為對女性之美與生命力的視覺隱喻。

漆，對我而言，是一種有 「生命」和 「溫度」的材料。它的成膜過程緩慢而不可逆，仿佛生命的孕育；其光澤與觸感喚醒了歷經千年的獨特文化溫度。漆的特性讓我在創作中探索其深層的情感。

我始終被弧形的漆面語言所吸引。乳房的造型是弧形中最純粹、最具象徵性的形式，既有包容的曲線，也隱含生命起點的指向。用漆塑造這一形態，既是對女性美的致敬，也是通過材質呈現溫暖、撫育與持續的生命流動。

因此，我以「泉」为題。泉象徵著源頭、流動與滋養，既是自然的生命之源，也是文化記憶中不斷被喚起的情感符號。透過這一系列作品，我希望將漆的物性（成膜、光澤、觸感）與乳房這一跨文化的象徵並置，讓觀者在視覺與觸覺的想像中感受到：生命可以緩慢形成，溫度可以被物化，而記憶與關懷，像泉水一樣，悄然流淌。
