About the Artist

Sakurako Matsushima, lacquer artist, was born in 1965 in Tokyo, Japan. She was first introduced to Urushi (lacquer) at Tokyo University of Arts, the oldest institution offering urushi education in Japan. Since then, she has continued to produce artwork using this material. She pursued her further study at Metal Carving Department in 1992. She came to China in 1995 for her post-graduate study on Chinese Art and Crafts and graduated in 1997 from Central Art and Craft Academy, Beijing. She is at present professor at Utsunomiya University.

Sakurako Matsushima makes elegant wavy shapes embellished with urushi lacquer, gold dusts and mother of pearl by applying kanshitsu, a form molding technique that can easily shape works and keep them light. As well as a talented artist and university professor, Matsushima is also director of the Asian Lacquer Craft Exchange Research Project which aims to revitalize the art form with technical and educational exchanges between lacquer artisans in Japan, China and Asean countries.

Matsushima’s solo exhibitions were held at reputable galleries in Japan such as Galerie Pousse, Arai Atlier & Gallery, Gallery Kunugi and Yakata Yusai, Tokyo. Since 1989, Matsushima has shown her works extensively overseas such as China, Taiwan, Korea, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Turkey, U.S.A, U.K, Belgium, The Netherlands and France. Her artworks are collected by Minneapolis Institute of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Hiroshima City University Art Museum, and Four Seasons Hotel Lion Palace. She is represented by The Gallery by SOIL and is exhibiting her works for the first time in Hong Kong at Art Central and JOYCE in May 2021.
