The Gallery by
The Gallery by SOIL is dedicated to presenting the art of lacquer from Asia.
It is probably the first gallery in Hong Kong which brings together lacquer masters and artists of diverse cultures, blending the traditional with the contemporary to showcase variety in the discipline.
Since 2012, SOIL has devoted most of our efforts and resources to the design and research of this art form.
Kim LIU

Kim LIU 劉琴, born in 1991 in Yueyang, Hunan, is a lacquer artist based in Huizhou, Guangdong, where she runs her own studio. Since 2014, she has undertaken systematic training in traditional Chinese lacquer techniques, inheriting a lineage rooted in the Xiangdong Bin Family Traditional Lacquer Craft of Liling, Hunan.
Her practice centres on paper‑bodied lacquer, a branch of the Bin family tradition. This lineage traces back to the lacquer arts of the Tang and Song dynasties. Passed down through family workshops in Xiangtan and Liling, it is known for rigorous craftsmanship and a spirit of innovation. Working with paper as her primary substrate, Liu combines established techniques with a contemporary visual language, exploring new possibilities in lacquer while honouring tradition.
